Champions of Life Building

Imagine and Discover

"No one believed in us or me. Thank you for always being here and showing me what I can do!”- A student in the program

Program Details

Building on themes of courage and rising above adversity which are in the literature we produce, “Champions of Life Building” enables Prime Stage to help at-risk, inner-city students see worlds and potential beyond the walls and windows of their school and community.

Through this year-long after-school program, we go beyond providing artistic and entertainment experiences. Each year, the teachers identify a team of 10 students who show potential but have academic or personal challenges to overcome.

The Prime Stage team helps students identify their personal career interests and build their confidence by:

  • Enriching their lives with opportunities and connections that are not immediately available to them
  • Encouraging them to discover and celebrate their own self-worth
  • Providing long term mentors based on the students’ career passions
  • Inspiring them to discover what they have to offer society, not what they are told to offer.

Teacher Feedback

Success of the program was expressed by two of the students’ teachers:

“Prime Stage came to University Prep in the Hill District of Pittsburgh to provide an opportunity for students to seek out their future career interests through the exploratory process of theater. This unique experience helps guide our students as they move forward with their futures.”

- Mary Ellen Phillips, Social Studies Teacher

“The program provided my students their first opportunity to experience and grow through interaction with a professional theater company. Through interactive activities, Prime Stage is committed to understanding and knowing each of its participants, and because of this, the students easily built a rapport with the staff.”

~ Adam Flanagan, English/Arts Teacher
