Saturday, October 18, 2025
2:00 - 3:00 PM
Location: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Hill District 2177 Centre Avenue Pittsburgh, 15219
Prime Stage Theater presents Freedom House Ambulance Service: Putting Local History on the Stage. Prime Stage Theatre education director Linda Haston and playwright L.E. McCullough will present a program on the history of the Freedom House Ambulance Service and how its legacy has been transformed into a new play premiering in January 2026 at Pittsburgh’s Prime Stage Theater.
The play, Freedom House: Giving Life a Second Chance, dramatizes the 1967 creation of Freedom House Ambulance Service, America’s first mobile emergency medical unit staffed by professionally-trained emergency medical technicians. During its 8-year operational span based in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Hill District, Freedom House served as the guiding template for organizing modern EMS departments and developing standards and practices of today’s paramedic profession. In its time, the men and women of Freedom House carried out visionary advancements in public health, workforce development and community collaboration.
